December 15, 2017

The Somers Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) was hard at work this past weekend after responding to two working house fires within 48 hours. On the evening of December 15th at approximately 16:53, in the midst of a snowstorm, the SVFD was dispatched to a reported structure fire with reports of fire in the ceiling in the Heritage Hills community. As units were responding, a member who is also resident of Heritage Hills arrived on scene in his personal vehicle and confirmed to the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services dispatch center via telephone that there was an active fire in the ceiling. He requested that a Signal "10-75"€ be transmitted. A Signal "10-75" is a working fire which initiated a mutual aid response from the Croton Falls Fire Department (CFFD) and a specialized Firefighter Assist and Search Team (F.A.S.T.) from Bedford Hills Fire Department (BHFD). SVFD Engine 183 as well as CFFD Chief of the Department Car 2071 arrived first on scene, Engine 183 attached to a nearby hydrant, and crews executed an interior fire attack through which they successfully extinguished the main body of fire. CFFD C-2071 established Incident Command and advised the dispatch center that all occupants were out of the house. After knocking down the main body of fire, crews from Somers, with the assistance of crews from CFFD and BHFD checked the adjacent rooms and the floor above and confirmed that there was no additional extension of the fire in the walls or attic space. At 19:12, the incident was confirmed to be under control and all units were released from the scene. SVFD Chief of Department Car 2441 remained on scene with the Westchester County Cause & Origin Team Zone 5 who worked to determine the cause of the fire. During the duration of the alarm, our neighbors from Yorktown Heights Fire Department and Katonah Fire Department covered the Somers Fire District during the incident and responded to 3 additional alarms while SVFD members were busy in Heritage Hills.

The Somers Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank our neighbors for helping us out not only at the working structure fire but for also providing aid to the Town of Somers during the time of the alarm!
