At approximately 4:40pm The Somers Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Lovell Street and Route 202 for a reported brush fire. While responding our dispatch advised that they were receiving multiple calls reporting multiple locations. Car 2445 was the first arriving Somers FD unit to the area and reported a large brush fire in the area between Lovell Street and David Road. Due to the remote nature units had trouble finding access to the fire. The command post was established in the new Boulder Ponds development off of Lovell Street. Units were able to access the woods from both the Lovell Street side and from behind the houses on David Road. Upon arrival and first access to the woods it was found that approximately three acres was involved. Mutual aid from our neighboring departments was requested to assist Somers Firefighters due to the size of the fire. Crews entered the woods with rakes, backpack water carriers, and chainsaws to establish "fire lines" to contain the fire and stop it from burning further. Unfortunately due to the hilly terrain the fire was moving up-hill towards the houses on David Road at a quick pace. As the fire was rapidly growing additional mutual aid was called from other departments for both special brush firetrucks, tanker trucks, and manpower. With the fire rapidly approaching the backyards on David Road units quickly stretched hose lines down to stop the spread of the fire. Once the fire was contained and couldn't spread any further crews worked on putting out the spot fires and the "hot spots" in the burnt area. The fire was eventually brought under control after burning approximately 5 or 6 acres. It was an outstanding job by the SVFD and a great team effort from all the mutual aid companies. There was one injury to a responding firefighter. Car 2441 Chief of Department Wahlers had command and all units cleared the scene shortly before 9pm.
