Somers FD Incident #: 20-1662

At 2:55pm on Thursday August 13th, 2020 the SVFD was dispatched to the intersection of Route 100
and Route 35 (Whitehall Corners) for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident. While units were responding
information from the scene indicated that it was a serious MVA with multiple victims and extrication. The first
arriving SVFD unit car 2445 arrived 5 minutes later and confirmed the need for extrication and multiple
critical patients. A medevac helicopter was placed on stand-by for this incident but not needed. Chief of
Department Car 2441 arrived on scene and established command. SVFD EMT’s and Firefighters immediately
began triaging and treating multiple critical patients and extricating one patient from a vehicle. There was a
total of 7 vehicles involved in the accident including a rolled over box truck. Complicating the incident was a
diesel fluid spill from the box truck and a damaged utility pole. SVFD and Westchester EMS members quickly
worked to treat and transport 8 patients from the scene with injuries ranging from critical to minor. Somers
EMS was assisted by North Salem VAC and additional Westchester EMS units on scene. During this
prolonged incident Somers Fire/EMS also handled a 2nd Motor Vehicle Accident at the intersection of Route
100 and Route 202 that was minor in nature.

Due to the serious nature of the injuries the New York State Police Accident Investigation unit
responded to the scene and conducted an accident reconstruction. The intersection remained closed until the
investigation could be completed and the vehicles removed. New York State Polices, Somers Police, and
Westchester County Police, and SVFD Fire Police all worked together to close and divert traffic from the
major intersection for approximately five hours until the accident was cleared. The last Somers unit cleared the
scene at approximately 8pm and the roadway was fully re-opened. Any further questions regarding the cause
of the accident or the investigation should be forwarded to NYS Police for comment.
