The Westchester County DES Hazardous Materials Team was also requested on initial dispatch due to the nature of the call. Engine 181 and Car 2441 arrived first. Upon the arrival of Rescue 20 with a Hazardous Materials Technician aboard, a scene survey was completed and the residents were evacuated from the residence. The resident reported that a mercury thermometer had broken, and that there was mercury spilled on the floor of a bathroom on the first floor. The resident reported that they had tried to clean it up and had possibly come into contact with the material. Car 2442 established command and Somers FD units awaited the arrival of Car 2001 and the Hazardous Materials Team. The first entry was made by a SVFD Hazmat Tech/ Hazmat team member and another member of the hazmat team to conduct metering using a Jerome advanced detection meter to test for mercury. The Recon Team found readings for mercury and backed out of the residence. A second entry team in Level B protection from WCDES Hazmat entered the residence, and conducted a more thorough search for material. The team found it both in the bathroom and in the kitchen area. The SVFD and Hazmat Team stabilized the incident and ensured there was no further danger. 6 people and 3 pets were checked for mercury exposure and none was found. 4 residents and 3 pets were displaced from the residence until a specially trained cleanup contractor could arrive to dispose of the spilled mercury. The SVFD is thankful to have a great resource like the Westchester County Hazardous Materials team available to Somers when needed. All units operated for approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes before returning to service.
