At approximately 11PM on November 3rd Somers FD was alerted to a reported large brush fire on Route 100 in the area of Twin Knolls drive. Almost immediately 2443 (2nd Asst. Chief Jockimo) signed on responding. Dispatch updated him that they were receiving multiple calls stating a large fire. Within minutes Engines 183 and 181 signed on responding. Car 2443 arrived on scene and established command reporting a large brush fire advancing up the hill. The members of the Somers FD worked quickly to get initial attack lines into place but efforts were hampered by the rough terrain and the lack of an available water source in the area. The fire was complicated by how well advanced, the size, and the amount of large trees that had fallen in the area. Mutual aid was requested from surrounding departments for tanker trucks to bring water, manpower to help fight the fire, and special brush fire trucks with equipment. During the course of the firefight one Somers firefighter was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Somers and the numerous mutual aid partners worked on scene for a few hours with most units clearing and going back in service by 3am. Thanks again to our mutual departments that came to our assistance.
