Somers FD Responds to Residential Structure Fire on Van Rensselaer Road

On Friday February 13th 2015 at approximately 3PM Somers FD was dispatched to a residence on Van Rensselaer road for a reported structure fire. Engine 183 and car 2445(Captain Mackey) responded almost immediately and 60 Control advised they received an automatic alarm and a call from the residence stating that the closet was on fire. Engine 183 arrived 1st due and Car 2445 established command. The crew from Engine 183 located the residents and made sure everyone was accounted for. The crew from Engine 183 then entered the house and found a mattress fire in a closet. The fire was quickly knocked down using a pressurized fire extinguisher. Crews then checked for extension in the walls and ventilated the house. Car 2443(Assistant Chief Jockimo) arrived on scene and placed the situation under control. Units operated for approximately 1 hour. The cause of the fire was deemed to be from smoking in bed.
