On Sunday August 23rd just before 5pm Somers Fire and EMS were dispatched to Route 35 in between Whitehall Corners and the entrance to Pepsi for a motor vehicle accident reported to be a rollover. Car 2442 arrived on scene shortly after and found an SUV with serious damage and a seriously injured driver. Somers Fire members secured the vehicle and used our battery powered "jaws of life" to pop open doors for better access for EMS to reach the patient. Stat Flight medevac helicopter was requested due to the serious injuries of the driver. The helicopter landed on Route 35 at Whitehall Corners to pick up the patient. During the accident and helicopter landing Route 35 was closed in both directions. Somers FD units remained on scene for approximately an hour and a half assisting the state police with their investigation.
