This article comes out of the history vault here at the Somers Volunteer Fire Department. This iconic photo has been hanging in our Somers Firehouse for a few years now. Here is the story behind it as told by our members. The firefighter pictured holding the dog is John "Scotty" Thompson, a member of Somers House. This picture was taken during a structure fire that occurred in the mid 1960's. The fire occurred in the area of the now present day Muscoot Park. Firefighter Thompson and other Somers Firefighters worked to rescue a litter of beagle puppies during the fire. During that rescue this candid photo was taken. The photographer is unknown but we think him or her for this photo that now adorns our computer table at Somers house. Special thanks to Ex-Chief Edwin Byrnes Jr. and Fred Whipple for the background information.
